We managed to obtain a few snapshots of Martina Hingis training with French talent Camille Pin at Roland Garros. This is a pleasant surprise. Hingis recently announced that she and Anna Kournikova are going to play at the Wimbledon Legends tournament.  The return of the Spice Girls will surely generate a lot of publicity.

Hingis will also participate in doubles with Lindsay Davenport on the WTA Tour. The veterans have yet to announce their schedule however.

More Hingis news. Hingis will also play the World Team Tennis tour this July and a few exhibitions such as Nottingham.

It’s nice to see Hingis back in tennis. I won’t lie, I have always been a huge fan of her style of play and I hope that  she will grace the courts for a little while longer than she did back in 2007.

Enjoy the photos!

So is it a surprise that the ever swell looking Maria Kirilenko has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open? To me it is. I never expected her to reach the second week of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.  But like I wrote in my “I’ll supply the love: Maria Kirilenko” post and I quote:

I have high hopes for her this upcoming tennis season. I am actually hoping she will grab at least one title and make it into the fourth round of any Grand Slam tournament.

And she has exceeded my expectations already by reaching the quarter finals of the AusOpen 2010. Now it’s time for her to be consistent and I hope that she will be throughout the rest of the 2010 season. Just one step at a time. There is no need to rush.

When asked what she is going to do for her birthday she replied with the following:

Q. I believe it’s your birthday in an hour.

Q. What are you going to do?

MARIA KIRILENKO: I mean, I don’t know. When I was a kid, I had a dream, you know, to be in a Grand Slam main draw in Australia when I have a birthday. I think my dream comes true.

Q. Do you get to have champagne or do you not have that because you’re still in the tournament?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No, I don’t want to get drunk before my next match (laughter). It’s going to be difficult for me to play then. But, yeah, maybe after when I finish with my tournament I will celebrate with the girls from the locker room, with all my friends.

Anyway I am sure you have enough of my ramblings and so here we go with the photos:

Jelena Jankovic has lost her first round match versus Agnes Szavay (5-7, 6-1, 7-5)  at the Medibank International in Sydney. It’s quite the surprise but judging from the scoreline, she really did try. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.  And hopefully she will do better at the Australian Open next week. Personally that’s what I am hoping for.

Anyway since we won’t get to see any photos of Jelena Jankovic anymore, unless it’s her training in Melbourne, I am just going to spoil you with the following images submitted to me.

As an extra added bonus I have added a photo of Jelena and Ana Ivanovic in bikinis.

Oh and I inserted another poll in this one too. Let us know what you think and cast a vote!

Caroline Wozniacki Talks About Her Life

The US Open so far has been very surprising. Especially the women’s side of it. Yanina Wickmayer in the semi’s, Kim Clijsters making a strong come back, Caroline Wozniacki finally made her long awaited breakthrough and the big surprise of the tournament is ofcourse Melanie Oudin.  Oudin taught a lot of players some Russian. Steam course too.

It’s remarkable and amazing how far Oudin got in the tournament. But every tournament has such a story. A player coming in from nowhere being the underdog all of a sudden starts taking out big names.  It worked for Pete Sampras back in 1990, Marcos Baghdatis did it and so did Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Other remarkable things that happened during the tournament was the guy who kissed Rafael Nadal.  We had streakers at Wimbledon and many more wacky things. But a guy kissing another guy on court. Yah that was baffling.  Even though he made a lot of fans jealous, the kiss man is going to be charged for what he did. But what a stunt. I wonder how he got past security.  That’s something the US Open will have to work on.  But then again, it’s these kind of events that gives a tournament that little extra sensation.

Ofcourse how can you forget about the marketing machines revolving around the US Open.  We ,  at TennisGrandstand ,  have got many many press releases sent to us before the US Open even started.

Some of the pressreleases are really really good.  For instance the one they sent us about Caroline Wozniacki. It’s a three part video series where she talks about her life.

Enjoy the videos and the rest of the US Open tournament. The tournament which again is filled with many surprises.
