September 27, 2010 By Tennis Grandstand 3 Comments

It was 10 years ago on September 27, 2000 that Roger Federer concluded his participation at the Sydney Olympic Games when he was defeated by unheralded Arnaud DiPasquale of France 7-6 (5), 6-7 (7), 6-3 in the bronze medal match in men’s singles. Despite losing this important match – the only time Federer has been [...]

14 Majors For Federer, Sampras and…Woods

June 9, 2009 By Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Roger Federer won his 14th career major championship at the 2009 French Open, which not only tied him with one Pete Sampras, but another “rival” in professional sports, Tiger Woods. Ironically, on the same day that Federer won at Roland Garros, Woods won his 67th career PGA Tour event at The Memorial as he heads into the home stretch to try and win his 15th career major golf title at the US Open at Bethpage Black in New York.

Brits Play Historic Match, Big Day For McEnroes

March 3, 2009 By Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Olympic Gold, Experiences for Federer

August 16, 2008 By Randy Walker 1 Comment

Roger Federer is an Olympic gold medalist. While not the singles gold he aspired to, he does leave the Beijing Games with the top Olympic prize in doubles with Stan Wawrinka – the Swiss men defeating Simon Aspelin and Tom Johannson of Sweden 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the gold medal match in men’s doubles. Why do the Olympics mean so much to Federer?

Why do the Olympics mean so much to Roger Federer?

August 13, 2008 By Randy Walker 1 Comment

Why do the Olympics mean so much to Roger Federer? Perhaps it was a great run and wonderful experience he had in his debut Olympics in 2000 in Sydney. The following is an excerpt from the book THE ROGER FEDERER STORY, QUEST FOR PERFECTION (New Chapter Press, $24.95, www.rogerfedererbook.com) that outlines Roger’s “Olympic Experiences” from the 2000 Games in Sydney.

The Origins Of Olympic Tennis

August 6, 2008 By Randy Walker 1 Comment

The first Olympic tennis champion was John Boland, an Irishmen vacationing in Greece at the time of the first Modern Games. He entered into the tennis competition upon the urging of a Greek classmate from Oxford. Boland, who would later found the University of Ireland and serve Britain as a member of Parliament, won the singles competition in an eight-man field and paired with a German, Fritz Traun, to sweep the doubles title.
