No. 1 in the world Rafael Nadal has overcome second Frenchman in a row – after dropping 6 games to Serra, Nadal lost only five games to Gael Monfils (6-3 6-2) but the scoreline would have indicated much more one-sided match.

Arlen Kantarian, CEO of Professional Tennis, announced today that he is moving on from his role after nine years of record growth for the USTA and the US Open. Kantarian has agreed to work closely with USTA on a succession plan, and is planning to step down at year-end.

Look no further than center court at the Masters Series Paris to find out just what the Masters Cup means to the players…and the fans. Gilles Simon enjoyed Davis Cup-esque support on Wednesday afternoon throughout his straight-set win over Igor Andreev. Of course he is going to be a crowd favorite in Paris, as a Frenchman, playing against a Russian, but to that extent under normal circumstances? No way.

Before the tournament 10 players had their chances to take three remaining spots for Masters Cup. After the second round three players dropped out from this competition, among them last year’s Masters Cup finalist David Ferrer who has completely lost his form in the second half of the year.

Last year’s semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis has been struggling with injuries throughout the season and retired due to pain in his lower back in the first round match against Sam Querrey.

As the Presidential campaign winds down in the United States, it is interesting to speculate whether Senator Barack Obama or Senator John McCain will be a “friend of tennis” in the Oval Office. Tennis players with high incomes may be partial to John McCain for tax purposes, while Barack Obama seems to be more engaged in the sport.

Roger Federer drew level with Ilie Nastase on 57 career titles after beating 6-3 6-4 David Nalbandian in the final between the Top two seeded players. Federer never faced a break point and won in Basel third straight year.

Ana Ivanovic ended a dismal recent stretch by winning the WTA event in Linz, Austria on Sunday. Ivanovic crushed Verz Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 in a mere 50 minutes to take the title.

Jim Courier won his sixth career Outback Champions Series event – and his third title in 2008 – with a dramatic 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 (Champions Tie-Breaker) victory over Thomas Enqvist of Sweden Sunday in the final of the $150,000 Stanford Championships at the Turpin Tennis Center on the campus of Southern Methodist University.
