The St. Petersburg draw is already in shambles after just two rounds of the tournament, as seeds are tumbling out at an alarming rate. No. 5 Marin Cilic, No. 6 Dmitry Tursunov, and No. 7 Mario Ancic were all upset in their openers.

Roger Federer got his bid to capture a third straight title in Basel off to winning start on Tuesday, but not without a scare. American Bobby Reynolds took the second set in a tiebreaker, but Federer turned things around to prevail 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 in one hour and 50 minutes.

The women were grossly overshadowed by the men last week; that’s simply what happens when there is a Masters Series event on the men’s side. And that’s especially what happens when a shocking semifinal Saturday features Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer tumble out in succession, both after blowing one-set leads.

Before this, his breakout 2008 campaign, Simon was a virtual unknown outside of die-hard tennis fan circles. Even now he has to be the least-known player inside the top 20. It goes without saying that he is far from a fan favorite.

Much was expected of Monfils when-as an 18-year-old-he rolled through the juniors to win the first three Grand Slams of the year (the Australian Open, the French Open, on Wimbledon). He was supposed to be the next big thing for France, and possibly even for all of tennis. And who could deny the hype?

With ATP Tour action really taking off this week at the Masters Series Madrid, the women are getting thoroughly overshadowed. It should not go unnoticed, however, that this week’s WTA event in Zurich, Switzerland boasts an outstanding field, especially considering the draw size is just 28.

Marat Safin stole the show in Moscow, where most of the tennis action is taking place this week since both men and women are competing at the Kremlin Cup. As usual, Safin made headlines for something other than his play.
