Vaidisova and Three Russians In The Final Four
In a repeat of their Roland Garros match, eighth seed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic beat top seed Amelie Mauresmo of France 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) in their quarterfinal match at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Russia, . After this match, Mauresmo and Vaidisova now share two wins apiece in their career head-to-head wins.
Mauresmo won the first set handily, 6-1 and was poised for a match win at 5-2 in the second set. But the young Czech hung tough to win the next five games for a third deciding set. Vaidisova led Mauresmo 4-2 only to see the French roaring back in the game. Mauresmo was a point away from sealing the match but could not convert the match point. The third set saw Vaidisova’s booming serve and excellent ground game. In the end, Vaidisova won the third set, 7-6(3).
“It’s disappointing,” said Mauresmo. “The thing about tie-breaks is it’s about taking your opportunities. I did that yesterday, but obviously not today. I think it’s also very important to be physically fresh at the end of the match, but that also wasn’t the case today.”
“I definitely started the match very badly, but at 5-2 I told myself I had to play better or lose,” an elated Vaidisova said. “Once I got into the third set, I had some opportunities and even had a break. Even though I lost that break, I managed to stay positive and kept fighting, and that’s why I won today.”
Vaidisova joins three Russians in the final four of the Kremlin Cup. Vaidisova meets Nadia Petrova in the semifinal after the Russian beat compatriot Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-1. Elena Dementieva, who won against Patty Schnyder,7-6(6), 7-6(1), faces fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze who had a walkover after Maria Sharapova withdrew due to a right foot strain.
Vaidisova and Petrova share one win apiece in their career head-to-head wins while Dementeiva leads Chakvetadze 2-0.
