Martina Hingis Sails Into The Quarterfinals
Swiss Martina Hingis advanced into her eleventh quarter-finals in fifteen tournaments by beating Slovak Daniela Hantuchova in two sets,7-5, 6-4. Hingis took one hour and thirty-five minutes in her two-set demolition of Hantuchova. With her win, Hingis now leads Hantuchova in career head-to-head wins at 2-1 .
During the first set, both players committed errors one after the other. Hantuchova was then poised to take the first set at 5-4, 40-0 on Hingis’ serve. Alas, Hantuchova wasted three set points to hand Hingis the game, leveling the score to 5-5. Hingis then went on to win the next two games and the first set at 7-5.
In the second set, Hingis raced to a 5-1 lead. However, Hantuchova regrouped and won three straight games to narrow down Hingis’ lead to 5-4, but Hantuchova’s charge proved futile as Hingis won the next game and the set, 6-4 to advance into the quarterfinals.
Fourth seed Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova will be Hingis’ quarterfinal opponent. Hingis and Kuznetsova is tie at 1-1 in career head-to-head wins.
“We’ve already had two great matches this year, I know I have to come out with the best in me” Hingis said when asked about how she’s going to play with Kuznetsova.
