Robbie Koenig: Bercy Beckons!
It’s already the final Masters Series event of the regular season - can you believe it. I guess the talking point at this time of the year is “who is going to make the final spots in Shanghai?”
I’m still sticking by Gilles Simon to sneak in - I think David Ferrer is going to be the 9th guy (unfortunately, because he’s a class act!) and miss out this year. We’ll wait and see.
Andy Murray is looking good - VERY good! Winning three tournaments in a row is definitely a possibility after a convincing win in St Petersburg on Sunday. Rafael Nadal had a week off, a bit of golf this week with his mate Sergio Garcia, so he should be well rested and ready for this week. And of course Roger Federer’s gonna be in the mix. The question is I guess, how motivated will the “Quad Squad” (Nadal, Fed, Novak Djokovic, Murray) be this week?” They might be just picking up their “bonus pool” checks before heading back home for a little more rest before Shanghai.
Before I finish, condolences must go out to the family of Federico Luzzi, who died so tradgically Saturday of leukemia. The 28-year-old player from Italy was a real character, and his death was so unexpected. He will be sorely missed by the tennis community.
I’ll keep you posted as the week unfolds…Enjoy!

Good to hear Ferrer is a class act. Seems like it - but you never know with his tendencies to get so mad at himself and smash rackets and all that.
I don’t know if it’s “unfortunate” that he missed Shanghai (lost today to Kohlschreiber). He has been awful since the start of the U.S. Open and if we want the MC to be the most competitive, we want the current best 8 guys and that means Simon should be in. He deserves it. What a fighter.
Ferrer needs some time off (I guess after Davis Cup) to regroup for 2009. He has a lot of points to defend early.
General opinions: Having listened to American tennis commentators for 20+ years, we in LA Love jason and robbie. Finally an amazing duo! They are fantastic commentators compared to the American baffoons starting with J. McEnroe, Barry Mc Kay, Dick Enberg, etc.. These people are not there to commentate, they are there to talk over the tennis, schmooze, hear themselves TALK, go off on tangents, talk about baseball and football and stupid, stupid comments.
Jason- we love you and your voice in Los Angeles, and Robbie you are a gem. Both of you are such thoughtful , exquisite commentators. jason -love your sense of dry humor too. Only one problem is that we are so spoiled listening to the ATP masters commentators, that we can’t handle the American commentators anymore. Tempted to mute their constant psychobabble in order to enjoy tennis.Ugh! It is painful.
Robbie- you are balanced and I don’t think you’re overly pro Fed or pro Nadal. How can they not be praised? they are 1 and 2!
I am a Nadal fan and I was displeased to see him drop out. He should not have entered the doubles in Paris and saved himself for China and Argentina. Why does he play so many doubles matches?
Keep up the fantastic comments, can’t wait to hear you guys in Shanghai!
Thanks for the compliments Steph, sorry i have not replied early, but am back home with the family. Glad you enjoy the commentary, we’ll keep trying to get better. If you come to indian Wells next spring, please come and say hi to us on site. This applies to any of the fans out there. We’d love to meet with you and talk tennis, whether you like us or not!
Sometimes Rafa plays doubles when he’s had a few weeks off, to get a feel for conditions again after a break. He also uses it as practise for his net game. Especially a tournament like Madrid, there’s altitude and that takes some getting used to.
